AMD's first complete AI system
AMD unveiled Helios, the company's first rack-scale AI system designed to compete directly with Nvidia's popular Grace Blackwell and Vera Rubin platforms. The fully integrated system bundles AMD's next-generation Instinct MI455X GPUs, sixth-generation EPYC "Venice" processors, Pensando networking technology, and ROCm software into a single turnkey AI infrastructure package.
At rack scale, a Helios system delivers up to 1.4 exaFLOPS of FP8 and 2.9 exaFLOPS of FP4 performance. The system is manufactured in partnership with Supermicro, which showcased the platform at Computex 2026. AMD positions Helios not just as hardware but as a collaboration blueprint for the AI ecosystem.
Microsoft signs on for Azure deployment
Microsoft announced it will deploy Helios systems in its Azure data centers for frontier model inference, AI customer service, and Azure AI workloads. The expanded partnership also includes new Azure virtual machines powered by AMD EPYC processors and broader rollout of AMD networking technology across Microsoft's cloud infrastructure. Early customers also include Meta, OpenAI, and Oracle.
Nvidia faces its first real rival
Helios represents the most direct challenge to Nvidia's dominance of the AI chip market in years. Analysts suggest the platform could help AMD capture 20-25% of the AI infrastructure market. Rather than competing on price, AMD is focusing on cost per token as its core selling point. Helios shipments to customers, including Microsoft, are expected to begin in the second half of 2026.
