Merck's Lipfendra gets FDA green light
The FDA approved Lipfendra (merck-012), a first-of-its-kind oral pill that reduces LDL cholesterol in high-risk patients who cannot tolerate statins or need additional cholesterol-lowering therapy. Clinical trials showed the drug reduced LDL levels by up to 55% in patients already on maximum statin therapy, offering a new option for the millions of Americans with resistant high cholesterol.
Alzheimer's progress on two fronts
A new experimental drug called diranersen, developed by Biogen, targets the tau protein — a different approach from the amyloid-focused treatments dominating the field. Early trials showed it reduced tau tangles and slowed cognitive decline in patients with early-stage Alzheimer's. Separately, a blood test that detects amyloid and tau markers was shown to identify healthy people at high risk for developing Alzheimer's years before symptoms appear.
Cyclospora outbreak spreads
Health officials are tracking an outbreak of Cyclospora, a diarrhea-causing parasite linked to fresh produce, that has sickened hundreds across multiple states. The CDC has warned consumers to wash produce thoroughly and be aware of symptoms, which can last weeks without treatment.
