200 million Americans under heat warnings

Climate change made the heat wave 'virtually impossible'
Climate scientists from World Weather Attribution concluded that the extreme heat wave affecting the US would have been "virtually impossible" without the warming caused by fossil fuel emissions. The analysis determined that the heat dome conditions are the result of a climate that is "fundamentally different" from the pre-industrial era. The July 2026 event follows a pattern of increasingly severe and frequent heat waves globally.
July 4 celebrations disrupted nationwide
The heat wave forced widespread changes to America's 250th birthday celebrations. Cities from Washington DC to Chicago opened emergency cooling centers, canceled or rescheduled outdoor events, and urged residents to stay indoors. In Washington, massive fireworks displays went ahead but with expanded medical support for heat-related illnesses. The extreme temperatures also raised concerns about air quality, particularly around fireworks smoke, and posed health risks to pets and vulnerable populations.
