Meta Compute targets AWS, Azure and Google Cloud
Meta Platforms is developing plans for a cloud infrastructure business that will sell access to AI computing power and models, the company confirmed through reports on July 1. The initiative, internally called Meta Compute, positions the social media giant to compete directly with Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud in the rapidly growing AI infrastructure market.
Monetizing the AI spending spree
Meta has invested tens of billions of dollars in AI data centers and infrastructure over the past two years. The cloud business offers a way to recoup those costs by renting excess capacity to outside customers. One potential offering would sell access to various AI models hosted on Meta's infrastructure, similar to AWS's Bedrock service. Meta shares surged more than 10% on the news.
Inflation and market context
The move comes amid broader market uncertainty. US inflation hit 4.2% in May, the highest in three years, driven by rising oil prices from the Iran war and Trump tariffs. The S&P 500 has been buoyed by AI enthusiasm despite these headwinds, with Meta's cloud play seen as a potential catalyst for the technology sector in the second half of 2026.
