Spain's wildfire rages as heatwave approaches
Firefighters in Spain are struggling to contain the country's largest wildfire of 2026, which entered its fifth day on Tuesday. The blaze, burning in northern Spain, has consumed more than 38,000 acres and forced the evacuation of several rural communities. Meteorologists warn that a new heatwave moving across the Iberian peninsula could further complicate containment efforts.
The fire is one of several burning across southern Europe, where a late-June heatwave was linked to 10,000 excess deaths. France's Mediterranean coast has also seen wildfires force hamlet evacuations in recent days.
Danube at 30-year low
Water levels of the Danube River in Romania have fallen to their lowest point in three decades, prompting irrigation restrictions for farmers and partially disrupting shipping and tourism. The low water levels are affecting cargo transport along one of Europe's key commercial waterways and have exposed sandbanks and riverbed features not seen in a generation.
Canadian wildfires continue to pump smoke into the United States, with Ontario's fires expanding and smoke lingering across parts of the U.S. Midwest. Air quality alerts remain in effect in several states. Trump criticized Canada's wildfire management, saying he told Prime Minister Carney the country must get its fires under control, a comment Ontario Premier Doug Ford called absolutely unacceptable.
