Trump, Speaker Johnson and tech CEOs meet on AI as Washington weighs its next move

Who is in the room

President Donald Trump, House Speaker Mike Johnson and a group of technology chief executives are due to meet on artificial intelligence on Tuesday, September 29, according to a source familiar with the plan, first reported by Axios.

The session puts the two most powerful Republicans in Washington in the same room as the companies building and selling the largest AI systems.

The regulatory divide

Trump has argued the United States does not need new AI-specific regulation. At the UN General Assembly he said he rejects any attempt to construct a globalist scheme to control AI, calling the technology amazing while adding that the US would be careful.

China has taken a different route, with rules covering AI algorithms and training data, including requirements that AI-generated content be clearly labelled. The two countries are the leading developers of frontier models, and their approaches are now a live trade issue.

Leading AI companies have warned about risks the technology poses to humanity and asked governments to work together to manage it — a message that sits awkwardly with a White House that has resisted new rules.

Where policy could bite

For markets, the channel to watch is not regulation but export controls. Prior rounds of restrictions on advanced chips and the equipment used to make them reshaped the semiconductor supply chain, pushed buyers toward domestic alternatives and created a parallel market for older designs.

Analysts expect the pattern that has held in similar episodes: a headline-friendly meeting, a readout afterwards, then a lag before anything binding. Compute and chip export policy is the area most likely to move listed names, because it touches both AI hardware demand and the tools needed to build that hardware.

None of that has been announced. For now the meeting is a signal of attention rather than a policy shift.
