Trump bars CNN, MS NOW and Politico from White House press access

A new front in the media fight

President Donald Trump said he is banning three major news organizations from White House press access, naming CNN, MS NOW and Politico. Politico reported the announcement, which follows a week of legal and political setbacks for the administration. Press groups argue that blocking reporters from routine briefings makes it harder for the public to see how decisions are made, and that access should not depend on how coverage is rated by the people being covered.

Court losses raise the temperature

The ban came after the Supreme Court blocked parts of the president's plan to limit mail-in ballot delivery to voters on citizenship lists. Trump criticized the justices in public comments. He also faced a ruling on congressional maps in a swing state and continued pressure over healthcare costs as the House left Washington. Republican strategists say high prices and fights over redistricting are hurting candidates in states that swing on narrow margins, and that the midterm map has become harder to defend.

Policy moves continue

In the same stretch, the president said all 50 states will take part in a Medicaid drug pricing model that the administration calls GENEROUS, saying it will save billions on prescriptions. Experts said the size of the savings is unclear because the underlying deals with manufacturers have not been published. Trump also said the United States had reached a security and investment agreement with Denmark covering Greenland, and his administration plans a United Nations event on artificial intelligence next week. On Capitol Hill, senators continued to argue over rules for data centers as utilities and states report rising power demand from AI computing.

White House officials have said the press pool needs to be smaller for security and space reasons and that outlets are rotated rather than removed. News organizations rejected that argument, saying the pool exists so coverage of the president is shared by many newsrooms instead of a favored few. Politico said it would keep reporting on the administration from outside the building. The dispute is likely to be tested in court, where earlier fights over access have produced mixed results for both sides.
