US goods trade deficit hits 14-month high in May as imports surge

Imports jump across multiple categories

The Commerce Department reported that goods imports rose to $267.8 billion in May, the highest level since December 2024. Consumer electronics, apparel, and automotive imports all posted gains. Industrial supplies imports rose 6% as manufacturers stocked up ahead of potential tariff escalation. The data comes amid ongoing trade tensions with China, the EU, and other partners.

Tariff impact falls short of targets

Despite expanded tariff coverage under the Trump administration, the trade deficit has widened 18% year-to-date compared to the same period in 2025. The Tax Foundation estimates the 2026 tariffs add about $700 per US household. Economists note that the strong dollar and resilient consumer demand have offset the intended effects of protectionist trade policies.

Federal Reserve implications

The widening trade gap adds complexity to the Fed's monetary policy calculus. Strong import demand signals a robust domestic economy, which could support holding interest rates steady. However, if tariff-driven inflation pressures build, the Fed may face renewed pressure to tighten policy.
