White House cuts CNN, MS Now and Politico out of press access as outlets sue

Three outlets lose White House access

The White House has barred CNN, MS Now and Politico from routine press access, a move the administration has tied to what it calls unfair coverage. Correspondents for the three outlets have been excluded from briefings and from pooled events, according to reports on September 21. The outlets say the restrictions amount to retaliation for coverage of the administration, and they have kept reporting from outside the building.

Lawsuits and questions from Congress

Three news organisations are now suing the administration over the restrictions, arguing that barring reporters by name violates the First Amendment and the long-standing rules that govern access to the president. On Capitol Hill, the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee sent a letter demanding documents and answers about how the ban was decided and who signed off on it. Lawmakers from both parties have asked whether the same approach could be turned on outlets that cover Congress.

An AI Force Congress did not see

In a separate dispute over transparency, lawmakers say they were not told in advance about a new AI Force the administration announced, and that they have received no briefing on its size, mandate or budget. Members of the House and Senate committees that oversee defence and technology want the details in writing before any funding moves. Officials have defended the announcement as a way to speed up the adoption of AI tools across federal agencies.

Heading into a midterm test

The press fight is unfolding months before the November 2026 midterms, when control of both chambers is in play. Media lawyers say the cases could reach an appeals court before the election, and press freedom groups have cited the dispute in their annual assessments of the United States. The White House says its press office still takes questions from dozens of other outlets.
