Ukraine sent a record wave of drones toward Moscow on the last day of Russia's parliamentary election, and Russian officials said at least two people were killed. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said more than 1,600 drones were shot down across Russia from Saturday onward and that about 450 of them were heading for the capital. Several drones reached the Moscow Refinery and one struck a residential building, he said. Ukraine's president published video of the refinery burning. The attack came as polls closed in a three-day vote that offered online prizes, empty podiums and no opposition candidates. Poland said Russian drones crossed its airspace and promised a serious response.

President Donald Trump said he is banning three major news organizations from White House press access, naming CNN, MS NOW and Politico. Politico reported the move after a week in which the administration suffered court setbacks, including a Supreme Court decision that blocked parts of his mail-in ballot plan. The White House has tightened access for reporters it says are unfair, while press groups argue the practice limits public scrutiny of the president. The announcement came the same week Trump said the United States had reached a security and investment agreement with Denmark over Greenland, and as he pressed Republican lawmakers on healthcare and data center rules ahead of the midterms.

State-owned China Rare Earth Group is in talks to acquire Shenghe Resources, two sources told Reuters, in a deal that would tighten Beijing's control over rare earth mining, separation and magnet supply chains. Shenghe holds a stake in MP Materials, one of the few Western producers of rare earth concentrates, so the transaction would give China's state group a foothold inside a United States supplier. Rare earth magnets are used in electric vehicle motors, wind turbines, pumps, robotics and defense systems. Separately, research from property agency JLL showed cross-border investment in commercial real estate rose 56 percent to 71.8 billion dollars in the first half of the year, led by deals in Asia and Europe.

The competition in AI chips is shifting from processor design to memory and packaging. Huawei said it will launch new AI chips in 2027 aimed at Nvidia's data center lineup, while Qualcomm signed a reported 60 billion dollar AI chip agreement with Amazon Web Services. ASML extended its lead in lithography as customers adopt High NA EUV tools, and Nexperia formed a partnership with India's Tata Electronics after falling out with its Chinese parent. TrendForce expects TSMC's 3nm monthly wafer starts to reach 180,000 by early in the fourth quarter. Industry group SIA says semiconductors account for 95 percent of the value of an AI server rack, from logic to memory and power devices.

NASA awarded SpaceX a 946 million dollar contract modification to fly three more astronaut missions to the International Space Station. The flights, labeled Crew-15, Crew-16 and Crew-17, extend the company's Commercial Crew Transportation Capability agreement to 17 missions and a total value of 5.92 billion dollars, with a performance period running through 2030. SpaceX is flying Crew-12 and expects to launch Crew-13 in early October. Boeing's Starliner has still not flown an operational crew rotation after its 2024 test flight ended with astronauts returning on another vehicle. NASA says the deal keeps access to the station through two commercial partners.

A new generation of pTau217 blood tests is changing how Alzheimer's disease is detected. The FDA cleared Roche and Eli Lilly's Elecsys pTau217 plasma test as the first single-biomarker assay that can both rule in and rule out amyloid pathology in adults aged 55 and older, and Fujirebio's Lumipulse G pTau217 ratio test came first. Both measure proteins in blood instead of relying on PET scans or lumbar punctures, which are costly and hard to access. Researchers estimate about 75 percent of people with dementia remain undiagnosed. A JAMA viewpoint warns that wider testing carries risks, including unnecessary treatment and unclear use in primary care.

A United Nations Environment Programme report called Limiting Overshoot says there are no plausible scientific pathways that keep global warming below 1.5 degrees Celsius, and that the limit will be breached within the next few years. In the most optimistic scenario, peak warming reaches about 1.8 degrees. UNEP chief Inger Andersen said every fraction of a degree will cost lives, and the report warns that even a temporary exceedance will leave irreversible losses. The findings arrive as Climate Week NYC runs from September 20 to 27, with governments, investors and companies meeting in New York to discuss emissions cuts and adaptation funding.
