Hurricanes Humberto and Imelda are churning through the western Atlantic at the same time and passed within about 750 km of each other this week, the second-closest approach by two Atlantic hurricanes on record. Humberto briefly reached Category 5 before easing back to Category 4, while Imelda formed near the northwestern Bahamas and was forecast to reach hurricane strength off the US Southeast coast. Neither storm is expected to make landfall on the US mainland. The overlap is still dangerous: swells from both systems are pushing rip currents, big breaking waves and beach erosion from Florida through the Carolinas, and forecasters warn the surf threat will last for the rest of the week. Imelda is then expected to turn east into open water.

NBC, Fox News, CBS and ABC agreed to resume shared pool coverage of President Donald Trump on Sunday, even as the White House kept CNN out of the rotating group that travels with the president. The White House barred CNN, MS NOW and Politico from covering the president earlier this month. The three outlets sued, calling the ban a blatant violation of the First Amendment, and a federal judge appointed by Trump ordered the administration to reinstate them for two weeks. The administration has continued to exclude them from pool rotations. The dispute matters because most news organisations depend on pool reports to cover the president, so exclusions shrink what the public sees.

The University of Michigan's final September reading of consumer sentiment came in at 48.1, down from 51.7 in August and 12.7% below a year ago. It is the lowest reading in four months and roughly 15% below January. The expectations index dropped 10.1% to 46.3. Consumers cited high prices, especially fuel, and re-escalating trade disputes. Oil markets have been volatile all year as the war with Iran disrupted production and cargo shipping in the Gulf, and those costs feed into petrol, freight rates and eventually shelf prices. The gloom cut across party lines: Republican sentiment is about 20% below January, Democratic sentiment down 13%.

President Donald Trump, House Speaker Mike Johnson and a group of technology chief executives are due to meet on artificial intelligence on Tuesday, September 29, according to people familiar with the plan, first reported by Axios. Trump has argued the US does not need new AI-specific regulation and told the UN General Assembly he rejects any attempt to build a globalist scheme to control AI. China has taken a different route, with rules covering algorithms and training data and labelling requirements for AI-generated content. Leading AI labs have warned about risks to humanity and asked governments to coordinate. Analysts expect export controls on advanced chips and compute to be the channel most likely to touch listed companies.

Researchers have recovered more than 12,000 microscopic fossils from 1.7-billion-year-old rocks in northern Australia. The cells are early eukaryotes, the group that includes all plants, animals and fungi, and they date from long before animals appeared. Chemistry of the surrounding rock shows the eukaryotes thrived only in shallow, oxygenated coastal water; in deeper water where oxygen had not reached, the fossil assemblages contained only simple single-celled bacteria. The fossils range from plain spheres to elaborate forms with jutting appendages, plates and creased surfaces. The find adds evidence that rising oxygen, not just evolutionary invention, gate-kept the spread of complex cells.

Game 1 of the American League wild card series between the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox is set for Tuesday, September 29. Both clubs finished the regular season in the top five in team ERA, making it a pitching-first matchup. The Yankees' question is captain Aaron Judge, who missed 84 games with a rib injury, returned in early September and then went back on the injured list with a calf strain after seven games. Judge plans to play but manager Aaron Boone had to make the roster call by the morning of Game 1. In the National League, San Diego opened as a narrow favourite over Chicago and Atlanta is a slight favourite over Philadelphia.

Researchers at the University of Florida used artificial intelligence to search deidentified health records from 2012 to 2024 for patients diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease or related dementias, or with mild cognitive impairment. About 8% of both groups reported taking glucosamine — 1,896 patients with dementia and 2,750 with mild cognitive impairment. After adjusting for age, sex and demographics, glucosamine use was associated with a 25% higher likelihood that mild cognitive impairment progressed to dementia. An analysis of records from nearly 42,000 people with mild cognitive impairment found a similar link. The study is observational and shows an association, not proof that the supplement causes the change.

A UN report ahead of this year's climate talks says current policies put the world on track for at least 1.8C of warming, beyond the 1.5C goal of the Paris Agreement. Officials now frame the goal as limit overshoot, peak, decline — accept that the limit will be breached, then bend emissions down hard. Three COP summits land in one autumn: the desertification meeting already finished, the biodiversity conference in Armenia in October, and COP31 in Antalya, Turkey, from 9 to 20 November, with Australia leading negotiations. 2026 brought deadly Himalayan floods, European wildfires and heat, and one of the hottest summers recorded.
