Two attacks, hours apart

Two mass shootings in South African townships left at least 27 people dead, the BBC and NBC News reported. The attacks happened hours apart, in communities that already live with high levels of gang-related armed violence.

Police released no full account of either attack. Officers said extra units were being sent to the affected areas and that several leads were being followed. No complete list of arrests was made public.

A country used to gun violence

South Africa records one of the world's highest homicide rates. Illegal firearms are used in most killings, and township shootings often grow out of disputes between rival groups over territory, extortion and drug routes.

Community organisations say the pattern has become predictable in some neighbourhoods, where residents describe shootings as a nightly risk. They have asked for longer sentences for gang leaders, more visible patrols and faster police response times.

Researchers who track violent crime argue that arrests alone have not changed the trend. They point to slow case work, overloaded courts and a steady supply of stolen or smuggled guns as reasons the shootings repeat.

A separate investigation

In a separate case, investigators found the body of a tenth woman as they continued to work through a series of killings, NBC News reported. That inquiry has drawn national attention and renewed calls for specialist units to handle cases involving violence against women.

Both stories point to the same pressure point: limited investigative capacity. Police said more details would be released as the investigations move forward.
